I’ve just had an interesting experience and it made me want to talk about the looks and image.
I felt like having Vietnamese food, so I went to a place that I know, it was closed, so I fell back on another one next to it. The outside was not appealing at all, the iron curtain in the front was half closed, the Window panes were dirty, the neon sign of the logo was off. A peep in the Inside was not quite inviting either, the floor was not very clean, there was no music. Despite all of that, I decided to give it a chance and go beyong the visual.
I ordered a two course menu starting with a vermicelli soup. When the steaming soup came, I tasted it and my first impression was that I was having plain hot water with a bit of salt. It was tasteless. Immediately I started to Wonder What I had brought myself into, and thinking « Why do you think you are the only client in here, there might be a good Reason for that« . I decided to eat the vegetables and the vermicelli which were at the Bottom and not to drink the Juice.
Actually What I realised is that I had been surprised by the taste of the soup because the food I was eating was natural without all the additives and flavour enhancers we are used to find in most of the most popular Asian restaurants in town. As I continued eating the soup, I could experience the flavour of all its ingrédients, the crunch of the vegetables and I must admit that I really enjoyed that soup, and I didn’t drink the juice because I wanted to save myself for the next course.
The main course was sauteed porc with vegetables, served with Cantonese rice. The rice was a bit too oily for me, but it didn’t have the artificial flavour it usually has in the other restaurants. I said to myself that it’s crazy how we easily get used to consuming processed food and loose the taste of natural products. The porc also had a natural flavour, all the vegetables were well cooked and there was very little fat in it (which balanced the rice). I even ate all the soy when I Don’t like it normally, it was very well cooked and matched the rest perfectly.
This meal has truly been an Opportunity for me to meditate upon the importance of the image on a product, a person, a place, etc. There was another man who came later in the restaurant apart from me, but I think justice is not being done to the cuisine of this place, the food is simple, tasty and respectful of the genuine taste of the products. While I sat there, other people stopped to look at the menu outside of the restaurant, but they probably stopped themselves from entering because of the unwelcoming looks of the outside and the general presentation of the place. It’s such a shame. I wanted to give the waiter some advice as to how they could improve the place with just small changes, and make it more appealing for people to come. I didn’t it out of shyness and because I feared they might not appreciate my intervention.
How many things do we miss because we stop at the first sight ? How many interesting people Don’t we meet and get to know because we are pushed away by their appearance ?
I was really knocked today and will galdly go back and see if my first impressions are confirmed. Maybe I’ll have the courage to make a few suggestions.
