Hurray ! It’s been three weeks now that we’re being inspired by Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. I love today’s habit very much, it’s all about priorities my friends. Let’s go !
Habit 3 : Put first things first, or how to become principle centered.
A central question to ask ourselves is this one : What is the one thing that I’m not doing now that would bring a tremendous change in my life ?
Covey tells us that in order to be effective in every field of our life we should Apply the following few keys :
- Independent will
- Act instead of being acted upon
- Organize and execute around priorities
We need to find out how we spend our time and Energy and on what. Things go into different categories, they are important, not important, urgent or not urgent. Stephen Covey designed a four quadrant matrix which explains where our focus must be.
We should focus on the second quadrant and do the things which are important but not urgent such as connecting with ourselves or our friends and family, bonding, planning, looking for new opportunities, etc. For those things in quadrant two, we need space and a clear mind.
The author warns us against the search for success in the outside. We must first become successful with ourselves before we are with the others, in the outside.
We live with one another, proactivity also regards our relationships. Covey says that everybody has an emotional account which can be filled or emptied. In a successful Relationship, each Partner fills the other’s emotional account. How is this done ? It can all be summed up like this : by understanding the person, making what is important for them as important as themselves for us.
- Attending to the little things
- Keeping commitments and promises
- Clarifying the expectations
- Showing personal integrity
- Apologizing sincerely when we make a mistake
As we can see, everything revolves around our BEs and not at all around our HAVEs. We are invited to work on ourselves, to set our priorities and to stick to them giving them the needed attention.
