Does taking care of oneself necessarily imply using lots of cosmetics?
When you enter the bathroom of the majority of women (including me probably), you find tons of shampoos, shower gels, déodorants, perfumes, and so forth.
Google or YouTube enquiries on natural beauty generally lead to the use of cosmetics, they may be more « natural » but they still include artificial components to take care of our bodies. Yet, it’s well known now that the majority of beauty cosmetics are made of chemicals which might harm us by causing disturbances to our endocrinal system. What’s more our budget is not spared. Those are among the reasons why I wanted to find truly natural solutions when it comes to taking care of my skin, my hair, my teeth.
I am not saying that you shouldn’t use any industrial product at all, I am just sharing with you a few more options to add to your routine, so that you can reduce the use of chemicals that may be harmful in the long run by replacing them with more ecological substances.
Skin care : my skin is dry, which means it needs hydration. I used to buy good smelling body lotions from the grocery store, I replaced them with 100% natural almond oil, coconut oil or Simply olive oil. These products are often part of the lotions you buy, but only in small amounts, which makes them insufficient ; besides, additional ingredients are added and those, I wanted to avoid. If you want to add a sent to these oils you can put a few drops of your favourite essential oil (please follow the instructions). The bonus is the savings you are going to make compared to the products you buy. The amount you use doesn’t have to be big, a few drops Inside of your hand are enough to cover the desired zone. For the shower I use a bar of soap or liquid Marseille soap, or Alep soap. You can find them natural or sented as you prefer. The use of an exfoliating glove or a shower brush is a good habit to adopt in order to naturally exfoliate your skin. Rub gently to avoid irritations.
Deodorant : being part of those who perspire a lot, I have fought this natural phenomenon for a long time by using deodorants and antiperspirants of all sorts without finding satisfaction. Then I discovered alum stone, which is a natural, non agressive product that helps regulate perspiration naturally. To fight smells of sweat, baking soda is your friend forever. Humidify your armpits and apply a small amount of baking soda by gently rubbing, don’t rub too hard to avoid irritations. Be careful not to use it on a freshly shaved skin, it stings. Personnaly I don’t have that kind of problems because I treat my hairs differently, but that will be the subject of another post. Baking soda can also be used anywhere you tend to sweat and have bad smells (feet, skin folds, thigh region, etc.), use the same process as for the armpits, a small amount rubbed with water, and that’s it. Same thing with your sport shoes or any closed shoes after a long day, (you know what I mean 😉 ) put some baking soda Inside of the shoes and let air-dry. Baking soda will not prevent you from sweating, but it will help fight sweat odors. It’s healthy and natural to sweat, it is society which makes us ashamed of it. Wearing natural fabrics such as linen or cotton and large / dark clothes can help avoid sweat stains. The easiest and simplest way is to accept yourself the way you are.
My hair routine : the first thing to do is to accept our hair the way it is. I know that many of us complain about their hair because it’s too strait, too frizzy, not long enough, etc. When it comes to hair, less is beter. You need to know your hair type, they often have different textures depending on the part of the head, you need to know if your hair is dry or greasy and use the appropriate shampoo according to its needs. I have tried using Marseille soap to wash my hair, but I didn’t like the greasy film that was left after rinsing off, so I chose a shampoo with shea butter for dry and curly hair. Generally speaking, it’s not the washing part that damages our hair the most but the series of actions we take around that part. All the products we use on our hair to dye it, to detangle, to straighten, to curl, etc., those are the things that damage and weaken our hair while compelling us to use even more products in order to repair the demages we first caused. So, in order to avoid that, it’s better to wear your hair the more natural you can and give it the appropriate care with the less manipulation possible. The only time when I brush my hair (with a large comb) is in the shower when I wash it. Detangling is easier and I have less breakage. After that I don’t comb it untill the next shampoo. Once dried with a towel, I Apply a little bit of olive oil or coconut oil ont the length and the roots. I style with my fingers so that my curls stay and then I air-dry. I will detail my hair routine for mixed / curly hair here.
Teeth and breath : we all learned that we should brush our teeth three times a day after the meals. Good. The most important time to brush your teeth is in the evening because that’s when you risk dental plaque, for the other moments, it all depends on everyone. A good teeth brushing requires a soft brush, a dental paste with fluorine, the simpler, the better. If you wish to remove dental plaque baking soda can help. Every other evening, brush your teeth with a little bit of baking soda, rub gently. You might bleed a little it’s normal. Stop the treatment when you notice less plaque. Used once a Week, baking soda helps prevent the formation of dental plaque. You know the products for fresh breath that sting in the mouth. « No pain, no gain? » Washing your mouth with baking soda freshens your breath longlastingly and it doesn’t sting !
Being beautiful « au naturel » requires self acceptance, just the way we are. The sequel consists in Learning how to take care of what nature has given us by using the right products. Plenty of boys and girls who have curly, nappy, frizzy hair literally tear their hair out regarding hair care because they didn’t learn how to love and treat their natural hair without using toxic straightening methods.
